What is bioremediation?

Bioremediation uses living organisms or biological processes to reduce or transform pollutants. In complex waterbodies, it may need to be combined with source control, aeration, circulation, desludging, constructed wetlands or civil interventions.

Bioremediation is not a universal standalone remedy. Continuous untreated inflow, hydraulic constraints, toxic contamination, excessive sludge or inadequate maintenance may require additional civil, mechanical or source-control measures.
